Henry Heerup :  1907 - 1993

'Salomons Judgement - 1947'

Heerup is funny, has fantasy, is rude, genuine,  limited, childish and divided.
All the above are some of the perceptions one meet when talking about Heerup. In every perception you'll probably find a little truth, even though it may be based on a deficient knowledge to the works of Heerup.
If you may characterize Heerup as an artist you probably can describe it as follows.
Heerup is a melancholy, serious artist with an rare open acces to life, which never loses it's authenticity living on in a fantasyworld.
-- In other words Heerup stands with his feet solid on the ground; but from the heart and upward he lives in a fantasy world.
To Heerup the hobgoblin is just as real as the police officer or the garbage man, and has the same influence on his actions as these real figures.
